How I Pack My Gear
When preparing for a backpacking trip, how you pack your pack can contribute towards your comfort almost as much as the weight of your pack. In this video, I show you how I pack my gear as I prepare for a six day backpacking trip. How things are arranged in your pack is important!

Love your channel and it has inspired me to get back out into backpacking again after 10+ years of hiatus (due to a wildly terrible 100+ ticks & black bear trip that scarred me in 2013.) Having used pieces from both Aclima and Brynje I can confirm the performance of these kind of baselayers. Both Aclima and Brynje share a really poor fit, however. They're both about 80%/20% wool/polyamide I think. Expect to size up from what you'd expect from their size charts and be prepared for long sleeves that aren't very long. My Aclima stuff wore out very quickly and, whist the Brynje material seems more durable the fit is poor - very snug in the shoulders and a good 5" short of my wrists. The mesh stuff from Ortovox is a way better fit and is much stretchier, and their Thermovent products are happily 99% merino and just 1% polyamide. It's very expensive though, so I'll be acquiring items as and when I spot them at end-of-season prices.

Sadley, I ordered a pack in November of 2023 from Waymark, and it arrived in January of 2024. I ordered their 60 L pack, it was on sale for 20 percent off, which was nice. The pack arrived and it fit fairly well but the hip built did not fit correctly. I sent Waymark multiple emails and I tried to contact them by phone. They completed ghosted me. I think they have gone out of business. The pack was nicely made but super-hot on my back compared to my Zpacks pack. I am not sure what I will do with this pack, I guess sell it at a loss and move on. I was looking for a beefier pack because I hike with my dog, and I carry all of her food and gear. Maybe I will try a ULA pack instead. I will admit I am very disappointed and how they treated me. Take care

Thanks for such common-sense advice! I have found, too, that the condition of one's knees/hips/feet is a factor as well. I have the beginning of a bunion as well as a knee that wants to give me 'runner's knee" on descents if I am not in shape (it resolves after many moderate hikes). So I have to be careful about how I walk (heel first) as well as toe box size. I now have 0 drop Keen water sandals, 11mm drop Moab 3 shoes, and 17mm drop Keen Cascadia. I may get a trail runner at some point but yes it'll vary per trail. Thanks.

I'm in the UK where it's usually cold & wet all year round. A good example of our summer time is today - it rained last night soaking everything, the sun was out this morning, it's now 12:10pm and it's been raining for an hour and everything is soaking again but now the sun is shining again and the temp is 61°F 🤣 I've seen lots of UA-camrs 'promoting' non waterproof trail runners because they "dry out faster than waterproof boots and because they're lighter you won't fatigue as quickly"... I'd like to know your opinion on this from our cold wet environment stand point, bearing in mind that most people in the UK are weekend warriors and not the thru hiking type. The British army debunked the claims in a study that a lightweight boot reduced fatigue compared to a full leather heavier boot while walking (The results were so small they were negligible) The results changed when they were running, the fatigue increased with members using the heavier full leather boot. So unless you're running, the weight of the boot doesn't make much difference to fatigue. I guess that's why they call them trail RUNNERS not trail HIKERS 🤣... My next gripe is that they say that trail runners dry out quicker than a waterproof boot. Now this maybe true but if you're only going out for 1-2 nights and it's wet out, your feet are more likely to stay dry the whole time if you wear fully waterproof boots but as soon as you step out in non waterproof trail runners your feet will be wet through within minutes! Plus they're NOT going to dry out within the day/night so unless it's really warm and dry the whole time you're out you're feet are going to be constantly wet/damp in trail runners?... So my question is: Which do you think is a better option for UK conditions? No waterproof trail runner or fully waterproof boot?

I favor alcohol though admittedly I haven't been on any longer hikes. I usually add a dash of 91% isopropyl along with my HEET so I can see the flame easier. My reasoning is primarily due to the multi-purpose nature of alcohol, it's obviously a fuel, antiseptic and it works wonders on pine sap. There are probably a number of other uses I'm overlooking, feel free to add below 😁
